Mestia Tamar Mefi Airport is 15 years old

For 15 years, Mestia's Tamar King Airport has been making it easier for locals and foreign guests to move from Bari to the mountains and significantly help them save time.

The airport is located 1400 meters above sea level. The construction of the terminal and the runway corresponding to modern standards started 15 years ago at the same time and despite the difficult geographical conditions, it was completed in an unprecedentedly short time - in 3 months. Due to its location, the airport is designed to receive only small aircraft.

Mestia Airport has made a significant contribution to the development of domestic tourism and especially the Svaneti region. Since 2010, the airport has received and served 86,300 passengers, which clearly indicates the growth of tourist flows in the region.

According to Levan Moseshvili, Director of the Union of Georgian Airports, Mestia Airport has created new economic opportunities in the region.

"Mestia Airport has really changed the daily life of the residents of Svaneti New hotels and guesthouses, additional jobs were created and the tourism sector was significantly strengthened. Today, only our company employs about 20 people at the airport. I thank each of them for the selfless work they have been doing for 15 years, despite the difficult climatic conditions," says Levan Moseshvili.

According to him, if traveling from Tbilisi to Mestia by road takes about 8-9 hours, the flight from Natakhtri Airport to Mestia takes up to 50 minutes, which is especially important for both local residents and tourists.

"Svaneti has always been an outstanding region with its natural and cultural potential, and the presence of its own airport has made it even more accessible and attractive for tourists," notes Levan Moseshvili.

The main architect of Mestia Tamar King Airport is German Jürgen Mayer Hermann. In 2014, the local airport of Mestia was among the 10 most beautiful airports in the world It was named among the Orts, which once again emphasizes its unique architecture and importance.
