Hand luggage fees may be waived in airlines

Passengers throughout the European Union will soon be able to carry hand luggage in the cabin of the aircraft without additional fees. Members of the European Parliament have supported a proposal aimed at abolishing hand luggage fees on EU airlines.

This change means that leisure travelers will be able to carry up to 7kg of carry-on luggage at no extra charge, with the exception of a small bag that can be stowed under the seat.

Matteo Ricci, vice-president of the EU's transport and tourism committee, said the move was "an important step towards fairer and more transparent travel". He noted that concrete measures would be introduced, such as "a clear definition of free hand luggage with a maximum size of up to 100 cm, which is a fundamental right to avoid unjustified additional costs."

This decision is a big win for passengers, but it is expected to be especially strong It will hit low-cost airlines. For example, Ryanair took in €4.7 billion last year from additional fees such as baggage and seat selection fees.

Airline lobbyists have warned that the regulation could lead to higher fares for carriers to recoup their losses.

The abolition of hand luggage fees is part of the passenger rights reforms proposed by the European Parliament. Additional measures include: Children under the age of 12 must be allowed to sit for free with an accompanying passenger. Allocation of free seats for caregivers of persons with limited mobility. Airlines will be required to disclose the full cost of the flight in advance.

Although the news is very positive for passengers, the exact date of the law's implementation is still unknown, as the proposals need the final green light for a parliamentary vote.
